What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest and oldest of the engineering disciplines, extending across many technical specialties. Civil Engineers plan, design, and supervise the construction of facilities essential to modern life like space satellites and launching facilities, offshore structures, bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, transit systems, dams, airports, harbors, water supply system and wastewater treatment plants. There would have been no historic wonders like Taj Mahal, Coliseum of Rome and the Great Wall of China or modern masterpieces like the London Bridge and Howrah Bridge if there were no civil engineers.

Considered as one of the oldest engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering uses scientific and engineering principles to design and construct structures such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings etc. It is pertinent to note that Civil engineering was developed as a separate field of study, only in the eighteenth century. A course in Civil engineering imparts not only a high standard of engineering knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills. It offers a multitude of specialisations, some of which are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, geo-technical engineering etc.

Scope of Civil Engineering?

• Civil Engineers are mostly required in private construction and real estate companies as project engineers. In search of comfortably safe homes, better roads and standardised living, the demand for civil engineers are to raise more.
• The construction and infrastructural development projects including town planning are on the rise in the coming days and will demand more domain specialists.
